Life Is Strange: Before the Storm’s Bonus “Farewell” Episode Ripped My Heart Out Of My Chest (SPOILERS)

(Spoilers ahead!)

We knew this would happen.

After playing Life is Strange, we know that at some point in the chronology – before Max messed it up with her miraculous time-traveling powers – that Chloe’s dad was going to die and that Max would move to Seattle. We’ve played all of the events after this pivotal moment, and a bit before this moment, but “Farewell” puts us in the single most pivotal moment in the story.

Starting out at Chloe’s house, Max struggles to find the right moment to break the news of her move to Chloe. It becomes particularly difficult, as Chloe kicks off a mini adventure that serves as a trip down memory lane. At every point, the story hammers home how close you two have been. On top of that, you also know that this is their last moment of innocence before their worlds are shattered. To say that this episode is bittersweet is still quite the understatement.

This short episode builds on the feels right up until you need to make a fateful decision. Do you tell her you’re leaving? I chose yes, but I did watch the alternate ending if you said no on YouTube right after. Either way you go, the end result is devastating, if if you more or less know what’s going to happen next.

“Farewell” is short, as you can complete it in about an hour. However, that’s not a bad thing, as it tells you as much as you need to know in that time span, all while crushing your soul for its full run-time. Playing it hurt, but it hurt like watching a good sad movie. I’m glad to have been a part of Max and Chloe’s story and I look forward to seeing where the franchise goes from here!
