Hori Compact Play Stand for Nintendo Switch Review

The Nintendo Switch is a cool piece of hardware with a number of unfortunate quirks. One of which is the flimsy piece of plastic that acts as a stand. Besides the seemingly inevitable reality that it’s going to break off sooner rather than later, it only extends out to one angle, making it less than ideal in most tabletop gaming situations. Furthermore, in the event where the battery runs low, there’s no way to charge it while playing in tabletop mode, as the power port on the bottom is obstructed by the table.

If tabletop gaming with the Switch is something you plan on doing more than once in a blue moon, there are a number of solutions out there. The Hori Compact Play Stand for Nintendo Switch is one such product that I personally bought to address this issue.

When folded, the unit is roughly the size of a large smartphone. Its build quality isn’t going to wow you, but it’s certainly an improvement over the flap on the back of the console. The bottom of the stand has rubber grips for added stability. There’s also bits of rubber on the stand where the back of the console makes contact, helping to keep the unit in place.

Setting the stand up can be done in a matter of seconds. Simply fold out the flaps and you’re good. There are no parts that need to be attached, so you don’t need to worry about losing anything.

One of the best features of this stand is that you can adjust the viewing angle between one of three options. Within the three, you should be able to find an angle that works for you. Adding to the ease of viewing is that the system is raised a bit off of the ground thanks to the front flap. This also doubles as a charging solution, as it lifts the console high enough for the plug to slide under. During extended sessions in tabletop mode, this is a battery lifesaver.

It would have been nice if the console itself had a better stand built in, but the Hori Compact Play Stand is a much better solution than one that we have out of the box. It’s a small and light unit that provides a stable standing position for the Switch and multiple angles while allowing for the console to charge. Assuming you can find one in store or online at retail price, they’re not going to break the bank either. If playing in tabletop mode is any sort of priority to you, this is a welcome addition to your collection.
