Upper Deck Reveals Legendary: Marvel Villains Deck Building Game

Marvel’s deck-building game is one of my favourites. Together with Upper Deck, they’ve done a great job of supporting Legendary with a steady flow of quality expansions. Most recently, they revealed the latest addition to the family, which is Legendary: Marvel Villains Deck Building Game. This time, you and your friends assume the role of the villains as they try and defeat the superheroes. At a base level, this is simply a role reversal, but it actually opens up the game in interesting thematic ways.

As of now, the good guy cards and bad guy cards work in very different ways. You build your deck with good guy cards and use them to defeat the bad guy cards that cross through the city. Since it has been confirmed that Villains will follow the same core mechanics,  cards from the “hero” game should seamlessly mix-and-match the “villain” game. Therefore, you can create your own scenarios where good guys are fighting other good guys (like in the Civil War arc), have villains fight other villains, or mix-and-match heroes and villains across both sides. As someone that’s reading the All New X-Men series of comics, this opens the door for a geek like me to follow the story and have Magneto team up with Cyclops and Emma Frost to fight Wolverine, Storm and the other remaining good guy X-Men.

Legendary continues to deliver the goods and Villains has the potential to really open things up. Now when I think about buying characters, I’m going to want their “good guy” version and “bad guy” versions so that I can noodle with them in any way I so choose. For players who haven’t tried the game yet and want to jump in as evildoers, this may be a great place to start. Legendary: Marvel Villains Deck Building Game is currently scheduled to come out in June 2014.
