Target is the Secret Best Video Game Store in Canada

Earlier this year, Target made its debut in Canada. At first, I was pretty disappointed with their video games section. It’s selection is smaller than Walmart’s and most of its games rarely ever go on sale. By virtue of living beside one, I would oftentimes end up at Target for other reasons, though I’d always leave their gaming department empty-handed.

But that all changed when the orange clearance stickers started showing up. To my surprise, Target began blowing out their games more aggressively than any other retailer I’ve ever seen.

My first pick-ups were Game & Wario and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which were $20 each. Firs-party Nintendo games never get their prices cut in half, and no Canadian retailer has marked down Revengeance to that extent before (or since for that matter).

My travels to Target have only gotten more fruitful. I’ve picked up the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection for $15, Defiance for $14, Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection for $9, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for $6. Most retailers in Canada would never sell any of their games below $20 after months of trying to peddle their wares for higher prices, but Target bucks the trend in a big way. These markdowns don’t appear to be consistent across every store, as I’ve seen assorted deals in one not appear on the other. Target’s website for Canada doesn’t really show products or prices, so you’ll have to go to the store and hope for the best.

Hopefully this post doesn’t jinx it, but Target is now my go-to spot for gaming on a budget. They mark their games down faster and lower than their competitors and their selection of quality clearance titles is constantly being refreshed. Because of this, I try to hit a Target every chance I get.
